meeting held on revitalization process

14 members of the Regional Synod, representing each of our four classes, gathered on Monday night to think together about shared challenges with regard to revitalization of congregations. We agreed that the congregation is the real place where this starts, and our role is to resource and encourage congregational leaders in seeking revitalization. Luis shared a comment recently made by our retiring General Secretary, that "culture eats strategy for lunch." This stressed the importance of paying attention to the cultures present in our local congregations. Using a medical analogy, these may be healthy, sick or dying. This led to a discussion about how to recognize the conditions of our churches, and how to offer the right kind of support for each condition. The Reformed Church offers an excellent summary of different kinds of church situations in the Fresh Start document. We looked at each of these situations, and discussed cases where churches have had to face hard realities about their conditions and what was needed to move forward. One of the more interesting options is for members of stronger congregations to be loaned to other congregations to assist in ministry for a time and to help offer new visions of church culture. We will have more report following, but if you are interested in the conversation, email us and let us know!
