important information for church treasurers

Church Treasurers need to be aware two changes in the IRS rules for the 2012 tax year. Computerized record keeping will be extremely helpful in compliance. If not already computerized, becoming so in 2011 will ease into the new requirements for
2012. Getting the information and collecting the data during 2011 will make life a lot easier in late 2012.

1. Starting in 2012, Congress has mandated that IRS receive Form 1099 Misc. for all unincorporated contractors, incorporated contractors, corporations, and suppliers that are paid $600.00 or more. This will require getting the EIN (Employer Identification Number), TIN (Taxpayer Identification Number) for corporations, or Social Security Number for individuals (a current requirement) for every entity that is paid over $600. Obviously, starting at the first of the 2012 year will make things a lot easier. Payments to tax exempt corporations, like most charities, will not be reported.

2. Optional for 2011 will be reporting the amount of primary health insurance paid by the church or corporation for each of its employees on the employee’s W-2. Primary health benefits will not be taxable unless they exceed threshold. At the present time, the reporting is scheduled to be mandatory for 2012 tax year. Source: IRS Notice 2010-69. Since it is optional for 2011, my recommendation is not to include on the employee’s form W-2 for 2011.

If the treasurers of the church or you have any questions, I will be glad to explain or direct you to the answer.
